Home-made beauty tips products:
how to preserve them?
If you start
making homemade beauty tips products
such as balms, creams, hydrolith, soaps ... here are some tips to keep your DIY
products at their best.
Balm, cream, soap, milk, infusion ...
how to keep by my homemade beauty tips can care your health?
The
home-made products are made from natural ingredients and contain by definition
no preservatives or synthetic origin. Therefore, we must be particularly
attentive to the way we handle and keep DIY products. Their main enemies are
air, temperature, and bacteria.
So, in
general, we advise you to store homemade beauty cosmetics away from light,
heat, and cold. The idea is to keep them in a tinted and well-sealed container.
Of course, during preparation, make sure you have perfect hygiene and sterilize
your utensils and containers.
How long do
you keep beauty products?
Homemade
single-use preparations made from eggs, milk, yogurt, plants or fresh fruits
(eg mask, scrub ...), can be stored in the refrigerator and must be used within
2 days of manufacture.
In the same
way, infusions, decoctions or hydrosols can be kept cool for a few days (only
24 hours at room temperature).
The balm,
fat mixture, semi-solid, consisting of a vegetable oil and beeswax but also
shea butter and/or cocoa butter, is without water and can, therefore, be kept
for 3 months at room temperature, protected from light. The idea is to add 0.2%
vitamin E for optimal preservation.
The unctuous
cream or even fluids contain for their water and are therefore more susceptible
to bacterial contamination. They can be kept for 3 days in the fridge and more
if you add a natural preservative (between 1 and 3 months maximum depending on
the water content), and always in a well-sealed container, protected from heat.
Attention, the milks, the richest in water, do not exceed 1 month in the
refrigerator, even with a preservative
The
vegetable oils (or base oils) are still better keep in the refrigerator between
uses, it will avoid that they lose their effectiveness and they turn rancid too
quickly. That is, with the exception of avocado, coconut, jojoba, sesame, and
extra virgin oils, most unrefined vegetable oils have a relatively short shelf
life (about 8 months at room temperature). ). The idea is to keep everything in
the refrigerator. To prolong the conservation of vegetable oil, you can also
add vitamin E (1000 IU International Units - for 224 gr of oil)
The
essential oils retain their therapeutic properties for 5 to 10 years if stored
away from light, excessive heat but also moisture. Be aware that some HEs improve
even with age, while those of citrus, if they are not stored in the
refrigerator, lose their effectiveness after 6 to 12 months depending on the
frequency of opening of the bottle.
The soaps,
once well dried, can be stored at room temperature, protected from light (which
changes colors and perfumes faster), in cardboard boxes or better in wood. It
is important that the container is not completely airtight to allow the soap to
"breathe". So you can keep your soap blocks for several years.
Conservative
techniques for home-made beauty products
Natural
antioxidant preservatives
Vitamin C
(ascorbic acid) powder or vitamin E (used for oil-based products) are natural
substances that are perfect for preserving DIY care. Vitamin E prevents the
rancidity of oils and butter.
Some
essential oils such as petitgrain orange, rosemary, caraway, sage, also have antioxidant properties. Know that
rosemary extract is also proposed directly in antioxidant conservation solution
(sold in organic and dietary store), we recommend 2 drops for 10ml of the
finished product.
Natural
antiseptic preservatives
After
oxidation, the second enemy of home-made beauty products is bacteria, germs, fungi. To protect and preserve them,
it is recommended to add 1% antimicrobial HE, such as lavender essential oil,
palmarosa HE, thyme HE or tea tree. Know that in another register, the propolis
extract (in liquid form) is, in the same way, a microbe armor.
The native
is also a very practical ready-to-use solution because this preservative of natural
origin makes it possible to effectively preserve all the emulsions (creams,
milk...) and washing gels (shower gels, shampoos). Antibacterial and
anti-fungal broad spectrum, it prevents the development of bacteria, yeasts,
molds in cosmetics containing water, extending their shelf life up to 3 months
in the refrigerator.
Grapefruit
seed extract: double shot
The
grapefruit seed extract (GSE) known for its numerous qualities is both
antioxidant, antimicrobial and
fungicidal. This is the product to have at home when you are a fan of DIY
cosmetics. However, be careful to choose quality EPP without chemical preservatives
such as benzalkonium chloride or triclosan or parabens. Preferably turn to
organic shops.
